About
Welcome to the culinary haven known as New Loon Fung Restaurant, nestled in the heart of London's vibrant Chinatown at 42-43 Gerrard St. As a food reviewer for Foodjoyy, I’m thrilled to bring you insights into this authentic Cantonese dining experience that transports you to the bustling traditional tea houses of Hong Kong.
Upon stepping inside, the aroma of rich, flavorful dishes envelops you, promising a meal that is both satisfying and memorable. Customers rave about the crispy duck, while others find joy in the delightful dim sum offerings, including pork dumplings and steamed Cheung Fun. The menu showcases a range of specialties, including:
One guest, Luca Lau, nostalgically recalls how "great Cantonese food here" feels just like the tea houses from his childhood. Similarly, Tanya Edwards couldn’t resist their crispy noodles. She shared her delight, saying, "SOoo good," a sentiment echoed by many who find their seafood and beef crispy noodles a must-try.
New Loon Fung's ambiance captures a perfect balance—lively enough to feel part of the neighborhood, yet intimate. While tables are closely set, it fosters a shared atmosphere that enhances your dining experience. According to Lisa Payne, the service is both friendly and efficient, allowing diners to relish their meals without feeling rushed.
For those venturing in for the first time, like Lloyd Stevens, the staff's dedicated guidance through the menu ensures a tailored experience where even the most indecisive diner can find joy. His culinary journey included a flavorful Beef Ho Fun Noodle dish and ended sweetly with Milk and Egg Buns, a testament to the restaurant's skill in capturing the essence of Cantonese cuisine.
The value of dining at New Loon Fung is evident—from the reasonable prices to the prompt service. Andrew Harbot-Taylor highlights the delightful chicken chow mein and prawn noodles as lunch favorites, further showcasing the restaurant’s diverse offerings that cater to all palates.

“ Great Cantonese food here! It’s very similar to the tea houses I used to go to when I was little. ”
“ Was craving (what I call) Cantonese style crispy chow mein. Searched lots of reviews and menus and found New Loon Fung does them. So we ordered two, the Beef and vegetables crispy noodles and the Seafood crispy noodles. SOoo good Apparently they are just called crispy noodles, not chow mein. Also had the dim sum selection which was nice. The pork dumplings were just ok. Great service. Very very friendly staff and quick service. I'll be back. My belly is happy. ”
“ Went there as part of a couple. The tables are very close together but in a way that worked well and it didn’t feel like we were overheard. We ordered dim sum, crispy duck and pancakes, sea spiced vegetables and prawn fried noodles. Plus a bottle of warmed sake. Everything arrived promptly, was delicious and we were never pressured to give up our table even though they were exceedingly busy. The staff were efficient and friendly, without being intrusive. Would definitely come back again. ”
“ We finally visited New Loon Fung in the heart of Chinatown and I can promise it won’t be long until we return. You enter on street level and make your way to the first floor. The restaurant was absolutely full but due to the turnaround of people we were seated straight away. The staff couldn’t have been more helpful as we told them it was our first time. They guided us through the menu and depending on how hungry we were advised us on what dishes to order. We started with a great selection of Dim Sum and Cheung Fun before enjoying a favourite of mine Congee with a preserved egg and a fabulous Beef Ho Fun Noodle Dish. We finished with desserts of Milk and Egg Buns as well as the Sticky Pudding with Taro and Sweet Potato. I know there is plenty of choice in Chinatown but I would highly recommend a visit to New Loon Fung because the food and service was excellent. ”
“ We had a lovely lunch here today. Prices were reasonable and staff were very friendly. Food was delivered quickly and was very hot. The food was lovely and very delicious. We had chicken chow mein, prawn noodles and chicken fried rice. ”
“ This is your typical Hong Kong Cantonese restaurant. The food is excellent, the decor is somewhat worn, but the service is brief yet efficient. We appreciated it because it's not a tourist trap. The Cantonese food is among the best in London within this price range. ”
“ Great everyman dim sum place, has all the categories of dim sum and serves the dinner menu at the same time if you fancy something off that. I go because it's also the only place in china town I know that still serves "mai tai go" service is great friendly and prompt. All round a very comforting always go back experience. Flying the old school flag as has been around for years. ”
“ At the heart of London's Chinatown l, which is well worth a visit, for anyone visiting London. We booked as we had a party of eight, however they have two floors which can cater for large groups. We chose one of the set menus for 6 and had some extra dishes from the younger diners in the group. Staff were excellent and the cost was very reasonable under 300 for eight with a couple of bottles of wine. ”
